A multitude of people
Walking this barren field
I hear a loud number of voices

Confused at what’s happening
I’m looking around wondering
Why there are two choices

One going towards the loud voices
Another going towards a bright light
There’s so many people I can’t see ahead

I’m walking forward with everyone
Some wander some strange roads
While I walk towards the light instead

My heart is swollen with hope as I walk
And I am met by an iron rod
“Hold on” my heart tells me

I cling to the rod with both hands
Moving steadily, with small steps
I think, Where does this rod lead?

I could see a mist appearing
And voices from the light to “keep coming!”
While the louder voices from the other side increased

I don’t know why they were shouting
“Look at them, they’re so poor eating fruit!”
Laughing and mocking, I felt displeased

The mist and the voices were overwhelming
But my heart swelled as I clinged
To the iron rod with my life

With a hope that it would lead me to safety
I moved forward through the thick mist
Knowing if I let go I would be in much strife

Breathing slow breaths, in and out
Concentrating on each step in the dark
The mist started to dissipate

My eyes needed to adjust
To the bright light coming from this huge tree
I was in awe and wonder

I walked forward towards the tree
And a man plucked a white fruit
And gave it to me to eat

I felt my heart couldn’t contain itself
This fruit looked delightful
But some ate and felt defeat

“Haha look at them eating their fruit”
“Look at what they’re wearing”
“They think the fruit is magic”

The loud mocking voices jeered
I look back at the man named Nephi
He beckons me to eat the fruit he picked

I look towards the mocking voices
And while my heart swells I smile at them
And take a big bite of this white fruit

They start laughing and mocking
And I gladly take another bite
And feel an immense Heavenly joy!

Nephi smiles and says “now you know”
And with a newfound conviction
I did not heed the loud voices

I feel it’s important to provide some context to this piece. I was inspired by Lehis dream in The Book of Mormon and thought about a character who, though it was derived from a dream, would have had their own unique experience

The character Nephi is not a fictional character. He was a Prophet in the Book of Mormon.
